Program: Research investigation focused on the development of a new urban toolbox for densification of downtown of Rotterdam
In colaboration with: DeZwarteHond, Bureau Lofvers, PH Urbanism, Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst
Rotterdam wants to strengthen its downtown with thousands of new homes, an attractive public domain with a quality public space and a diverse range of amenities. What strategy will lead to the desired and necessary densification ? What is this new spatial and functional quality of this city, why would they want to get it and how we achieve that? These ambitions and challenges that Rotterdam has set itself in its object of study, spatial problems and as well opportunities are not unique. Other cities face the same challenges. The several number of components of Rotterdam are therefore compared with five centers of ’mirror ‘ cities. . By studying and recording their spatial and programmatic development, the knowledge for the city of Rotterdam is generated.
‘Mirror Rotterdam’ is a half year investigation initiated by three teams of designers. The results are set out in this publication. ‘Mirror Rotterdam; is part of Project Rotterdam, a wider investigation focused on the development of a new urban toolbox for densification of downtown of Rotterdam.
